7 Do’s (and 7 Don’ts) you need to know before throwing a Halloween party

As the spookiest night of the year quickly approaches, you may be thinking about throwing your own Halloween shindig.

We’d all like to agree that we’re more than capable of hosting a great party but actually planning one can either be a walk in the park or a total nightmare on Elm Street.

Yes, parties come and go but there’s nothing like hosting an incredible soirée, especially one your guests will be talking about for years to come.

In order to receive the Best Host Ever award this Hallo-weekend, there are several treats you can do and some tricks you should definitely avoid.

1. Do: Pick a party theme.

This is a great way to get your guests into the Halloween spirit.

2. Don’t: Pick a distasteful or offensive theme.

This should be pretty self-explanatory.

3. Do: Wear a well thought-out and original costume.

Starbucks cups, M&Ms, and Game of Thrones ensembles are surefire way to win best dressed. But if you’re feeling lost, here are many, many suggestions.

4. Don’t: Be a jerk.

Costumes based on cultures are not cool and tragic events are never clever. And please, don’t dress up like Donald Trump.

5. Do: Supply your guests with sweet and savory treats.

Candy corn, chocolate, popcorn, and chips are perfect.

6. Don’t: Put out a bowl of bland snacks.

Not everyone enjoys crunching on carrots, Susan.

7. Do: Decorate the entire space.

Pumpkins are always accepted and a few fake spider webs draped around a railing never hurt anyone.

8. Don’t: Leave decorations up until January.

Your neighbors don’t want to be scared by a vampire popping out of a coffin in the middle of winter.

9. Do: Purchase a black light for your party.

Nothing says Halloween like glow-in-the-dark everything.

10. Don’t: Whiten your teeth before turning it on.

It’s not cool, trust us on this.

11. Do: Plan entertaining activities like dance contests and karaoke.

Everyone loves a great cha-cha slide.

12. Don’t: Be overly competitive when bobbing for apples.

No one likes a sore loser.

13. Do: Have fun!

After all, it is Halloween.

14. Don’t: Over do it on the alcohol.

After all, it is Halloween.

Have a safe and happy one!
